Line troops, Guerillas, Commandos, Warriors
Line troops do what you tell them to do and will get the job done as theyve been taught. By and large they stick to whats theyve learned in basic training. Most ad agencies are made up of line troops as well as most of the so-called marketing "professionals" on payroll today. Cannon fodder, in other words. Baby, its NOT an adventure, its just a job paying the bills and the sooner the shooting stops, the sooner they can go back to barracks and the daily routine of three hot meals a day.
Guerillas try lots of unconventional things to get the word out. Some work, some dont. Some line troops try to use guerilla tactics, but more often than not fall back on their basic training. Old habits die hard. Guerillas like to look outside of the box. Good guerillas learn from their mistakes and understand when to stick to plans and when to throw them out the window when events rapidly change.
Commandos are highly trained warriors with years of training and experience. They are trained to look outside of the box, and have amassed a wide variety of unique and specialized skills they can bring to bear on a specific problem. Commandos are most effectively used to solve difficult problems that line troops cant or arent equipped handle. You can use commandos as line troops, but its a very expensive waste of energy and training.
Warriors look forward to every marketing battle with zest and spirit. They enjoy the challenges and arent afraid of changing circumstances. They learn from their mistakes and understand they will make mistakes. Perfection is always desired, but there is also the realization that the Real World places limits on what can be done.
